PUPPY FEATURED ON NEW STAMP ADOPTED FROM AWS

On September 20, the U.S. Postal Service joined the fight against animal overpopulation with the introduction of Spay or Neuter commemorative postage stamps.  What better way to raise public awareness about this issue than to feature two shelter animals?   Even better news of a personal nature  the photogenic puppy depicted on the stamp was adopted from our shelter!

Kirby, an Australian Shepherd, Collie and Border Collie mix, was living at AWS when New Milford photographer Sally Andersen-Bruce took pictures of our animals for possible inclusion on the new stamp.  Two years later, Kirby's picture was chosen to be featured alongside Samantha, a kitten from the Little Guild of St. Francis shelter, also located in Connecticut.

The stamps were created to raise awareness and to educate the public on the importance of getting their pets spayed or neutered.  The problem is enormous - approximately 70,000 cats and dogs are born each day in the United States and between five and eight million healthy cats and dogs are euthanized each year because they are without homes.  Curbing the overpopulation of our companion animals is the best way to combat the problem and ensure the happiness and healthiness of the animals we love.

Preventing unnecessary births is the best way to help.  If you own animals, have them spayed or neutered and if unaltered feral cats live in your area, contact your local shelter and have them spayed or neutered.

Use these stamps and tell all your friends and family about them!  Education is our best weapon in the war against animal overpopulation.

To purchase the new Spay or Neuter stamps, call 800-STAMP-24 or visit any U.S. Post Office.
